Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏͼ¿â the Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Program

The Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Program at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏͼ¿â addresses the need in our pluralistic society to broaden one's knowledge about Latin America, the Caribbean, and North Americans of Latin American and Caribbean ancestry. The program focuses on the complex geopolitical, economic, social, and environmental realities of the developing countries and territories to the south of the United States, with specific emphasis on the Caribbean region. The Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Program also addresses the phenomenon of widespread migration of Latin American and Caribbean peoples to the United States and examines:

• The impact of United States society on the lifestyles of the various Latin American and Caribbean groups residing in this country
• The contribution of these groups to its culture and society
• The development of strategies to promote the enhancement of Latin American and Caribbean cultural identities and life conditions within the framework of the cultural, social, economic, and political spectrum of the United States.

Students with majors in most academic disciplines will be able to strengthen their area of study by minoring in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies. Students interested in pursuing the minor, or in learning more about our courses, should make an appointment to speak to program coordinator.

The LATI Achievement Scholarship

Every Spring term the LATI program awards one scholarship to outstanding continuing students currently minoring in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies. The award includes US $200.00 aimed to help students purchasing course materials. Check the NJCU LATI webpage for the deadline.

To apply:

1. Students must be currently enrolled at NJCU.
2. Must have declared the minor a semester before submitting application.
3. Submit a brief 500-word essay explaining the value of learning about Latin America, the Caribbean, and U.S. Latino(x) communities as a student enrolled in the minor.
